About this Course

Join this spirited class in oil painting and be surprised by your creative power! Designed for beginning and continuing students in oil or acrylic painting. Learn basic color principles and mixing from a limited palette through lectures and individualized instruction. Please bring all art supplies and pictures to the first class. Please Note: ACRYLIC/OIL PAINTING with Kim Manfredi IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS: Purchase either oil or acrylic paints. Do not purchase both. There are two supply lists below, one specific for acrylic, one for oil. Due to the high cost of materials, please do not purchase any items until one week before class begins. Save receipts. If the class is canceled due to low enrollment you will be notified. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR BOTH OIL AND ACRYLIC: Bring a stretched canvas ( the size is your choice), a cloth to cover table, easel, photos, pictures, drawings or an idea of something you would like to work on the first day of class. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR OIL PAINTING ONLY. PAINTS FOR OIL PAINTING: Do not purchase water mixable oil paints. This will be on the label. Do note purchase Artist Loft or Reeves brands. Titanium White (large tube), Cadmium Yellow Light, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue or French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Thalo Blue or Pthalo Blue, Sap Green. MISC. SUPPLIES FOR OIL PAINTING: Paper palette (styrofoam meat tray can be used), Metal palette knife Odorless Mineral Spirits (please, no grumtine), Linseed oil (not stand oil), Ruler and pencil, paper towels, bar of soap or brush cleaner, 3 small jars with lids (glass only, absolutely no plastic, no baby food jars). BRUSHES FOR OIL PAINTING: NOTE: Brush sizes are approximate, synthetic sable is fine. #10 Bristle Filbert (stiff bristle, not soft), #10 Sable Bright , #11 Bristle Round (stiff bristle, not soft), #5 Sable Round. If you would like to see pictures of the brushes for easier identification, call the Recreation Office at 354-8700. OR bring what brushes you have to the first class and purchase after the first class. ACRYLIC PAINTING ONLY: PAINTS FOR ACRYLIC PAINTING: Titanium White,(large tube), Cadmium Yellow Light, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light or Medium Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue or French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Thalo Blue or Pthalo Blue, Hooker's Green (if available, use Sap Green). MISC.SUPPLIES FOR ACRYLIC PAINTING: bar of soap, paper towels, ruler and pencil, 1 Jar Acrylic Polymer Matte Medium, 1 small jar white gesso, 1 dozen small glass or plastic jars with tight lids (no baby food jars), 2 containers (coffee can size) for water, acrylic palette (with sponge), retarder or slow dry (Golden brand is good), palette knife, canvas, 1 pair pliers, cloth, and a carry-all for the above items. BRUSHES FOR ACRYLIC PAINTING: NOTE: Brush sizes are approximate, synthetic sable is fine. 1/2" Sable Square, #11 Sable Round (medium size), #5 Sable Round (small size), #10 Natural Bristle Filbert.
